I found some of Dennis' practice material for those of us who are fans. Check it out.

I've tried the pillow technique before and noticed almost immediate results. I may just have to try the phonebook method as well.
Very interesting, thanks for posting.

Tried the pilloe thing years ago, but I think I heard it from Louis Bellson. Was all about pulling the rebound out and pretty much learning the Moeller method from my dad. His teacher had him practice on a pillow. These were the days of calf heads and if you pushed in you went thru the head,,,,,ooops....not an easy replacement as todays on and off plastic heads. But the pillow thing really works for muscle development and also for pulling the notes out of the drum. Did that pillow stuff also for Drum Corps so long ago (when they had straps and no bullet proof drum heads)and marching timpani.

That article was written by Pearl Corporation Product Specialist Ray Massey, who incidentally is a ferocious fusion drummer who plays a steady gig with the Wooten Brothers at a popular club in Nashville all the time...he held the drumchair for Tanya Tucker for a little while before the now present-day drummer for the Charlie Daniels' Band [another great drummer] stepped in [before getting the Charlie gig, of course.] CDB's previous road drummer was another great player who went on to other popular country singer Tracey Lawrence's band. Hope that wasn't too confusing!
Don't let the Tanya or country vibe fool ya...these guys are blistering drummers...ESP CDB's...

Raymond is definetly a killer player, as is Pat McDonald whom has the CDB gig now. jack Gavin whom Pat replaced in CDB is an OK drummer, has a strange technique and was fired fromt he Lawrence gig not that long ago.
side note: Pat went to berklee the same time as Todd Suchermann

The 'phonebook method' is something
Billy told me about years ago.
It works.

You got me, Randman...busted! You knew.
Pat & I attended the first Viinie clinic together in '84 [w T Landers], which is where we met. [first for ME, anyway; I think he as well; or maybe second]. Right then & there he told me that he was going to go to BSoM; Vinnie having gone there being one of the reasons.
Pat is a great player & guy...of the three, I'd have to say he's the most ferocious & musical...it would figure he went to BSoM at the same time as Todd. ;c)
But Ray has tons of super-bad-a** chops, too. ;c)
Pat has this great anecdote where he was playing this rotation gig [with other Nashville cats being on the list, such as Travis' drummer - you know who he is AW ;c}]...in walks Dennis, & Pat spots him...after the tune's over Pat throws his hands up in the air, stands up, goes over to DC, hands him his sticks, & tells him, "*Pssshhh* - it's all yours, bro!!"

personally, I think Ray is more of a monster then Pat and Pat is a friend of mine. Ray has more of a pocket to his playing.

Now see, I've heard just the opposite... [in response to your last]...
I saw Ray w Wootens late last summer in Nash, & CDB just a month & a half or so ago...both killin'. Ray smoked it, Pat is just smokin' the CDB gig these daze AW.
Both are pretty wicked players, in my book. Prob too close to call...
[& see edit to my last post]...

David Northrup, another fine player and a BIG Jeff Porcaro freak. David played a few tracks on the very last Les Dudek cd that Jeff played on, Jeff had passed away before the cd could be finished and dave met Les at a bar, chatting away he ended up getting to track for Dudek.
